It’s seven o’clock on Saturday morning when I enter studio B at my ballet academy. Kevin is already here. He sits on the floor with his legs straight out in front of him and his toes pointing up to the ceiling. He looks up when he hears the door shutting. “Hey,” I say.

“You’re late.”

I look at the clock on the wall. “No. It’s seven o’clock.”

“Exactly.”

OK. I guess next time I have to be here earlier than what he tells me. I pull my sweater over my head and place it in the corner of the room along with my bag. I start to put on my pointe shoes when Kevin tells me we won’t be using them today. “Barefoot for the Modern Dance class. I’m sure you’ll pass the ballet class. I’m not sure about the Modern,” he says, standing up and messing with his iPod. “You’ll only perform your solo if you pass your Modern technique. So that’s where we’re going to start.”

I do my best to concentrate and for the most part I do pretty well. If it wasn’t for Max coming in and out of my mind, I’d be able to pay attention to Kevin’s every word. From my bedroom window last night, I saw Max come home from his hockey practice and then I saw him leaving. A girl came to pick him up. I couldn’t see her well from my window, but I saw the long black hair, and I’m certain it’s the same girl I saw kissing him the first time I met him. I waited to see him come home but I fell asleep before eleven. I was so tired and I was sad. Sad makes me cry, crying puts me to sleep.

“You’re moving rigorously through space with attention to rhythm and changes of direction. Now you need to focus on your level changes,” Kevin says and he seems pleased. Good, because I’m tired of disappointing him and myself this week. I’ve been having problems with the choreography he suggested. I’ll have to work on that.

I get home from my class this morning with one hour to get ready to go out with Ryan. I change my clothes for the third time, pulling my jeans back up. I want to wear my sweater dress, but since I don’t know where we’re going, I opted for jeans, a long-sleeve brown tee, and an off-white sweater. I zip up my furry boots and look in the mirror one more time. I breathe in slowly and let the air out through my mouth. My stomach rumbles, making me nervous. Not because I’m going out with Ryan, and not because he’ll be here any minute to meet my father, but because I don’t want Max to see the whole scene. He’d think this is a date, and I don’t want him to think that.

I have barely seen Max this week. He’s got his dad’s car now and doesn’t need me to drive him anymore. His hockey practices started and by the time he gets home, I’m already in my bedroom.
